BALLET:

Central Virginia Dance Academy teaches a comprehensive ballet curriculum that builds with each level completed. Intro to Ballet is a pre-requisite for Ballet 1 and students must successfully complete each level or take a placement class in order to move on to the next level offered. 



Ballet Dress Code- 


Intro to Ballet and Ballet 1-

Girls Dress Code: lavender leotard, pink tights and pink ballet slippers or skin tone tights and skin tone ballet slippers, and hair in a bun.

Boys Dress Code: white t-shirt, black shorts or black tights, and black ballet slippers.

JAZZ:

Central Virginia Dance Academy offers a fun and technique based jazz class. This high-energy class includes a warm up with isolations, flexibility, and strength building. Center work and across the floor will include jazz skills, leaps, and turns.  Students will also enjoy using these new jazz steps in original jazz choreography. Using contemporary music, this class is a combination of classical jazz technique and funk. 



Jazz Dress Code-


Girls Dress Code- any color leotard, tights, jazz shorts or leggings, tan jazz shoes and hair in ponytail or bun. Jazz 9 will also need black t strap character shoes with 2 ½ inch heels. 

Boys Dress Code- any color plain t-shirt or tank top, black dance pants or shorts, and black jazz shoes.







TAP:

Using traditional and current tap techniques, this class focuses on rhythm, coordination, and various tap combinations that will set the foundation for future tap training. Students must successfully complete each level or take a placement class in order to move on to the next level offered.

Girls Dress Code-any color leotard or tank top, jazz shorts or leggings, black tie up tap shoes and hair in ponytail or bun. (Split sole tap shoes recommended for levels 4 and up)

CONTEMPORARY:

Contemporary is a blend of ballet, jazz, lyrical, and modern dance techniques. This class is a great introduction into the skills and technique needed to perform this popular style of dance. 



Contemporary Dress Code-


Girls Dress Code – any color leotard, jazz shorts or leggings, bare feet, and hair in a ponytail or bun.

Boys Dress Code- any color plain t-shirt or tank top, black dance pants or shorts, and bare feet.






MODERN:

Modern is a free and expressive style of dance. This technique often includes but is not limited to the use of parallel, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation.



Modern Dress Code-


Girls Dress Code- Any color leotard, tights, bare feet, and hair in a ponytail or bun.

Boys Dress Code- athletic shorts, white t-shirt preferred, and bare feet.







HIP HOP:

Central Virginia Dance Academy offers a high-energy hip-hop class that includes current dance trends. This upbeat dance class includes a warm-up, original choreography, and a breakdown of today’s most popular hip-hop steps.



Hip Hop Dress Code-


Girls and Boys Dress Code –tank top and either sweatpants, leggings, or cargo pants, black high-top dance sneakers, and hair pulled of face in ponytail or bun. 







IMPROV/CHOREOGRAPHY CLASS:

This class will explore various improvisation methods, as well as the principles of choreography and how the two can be linked together. Students will also learn famous repertory in a variety of genres and discuss the relevance of each of the choreographic principles. The culmination of this class will result in a student choreographed piece to be presented in the annual showcase.


Improv/Choreography Dress Code:


Girls Dress Code- Any color leotard, tights, bare feet, and hair in a ponytail or bun.

Boys Dress Code- athletic shorts, white t-shirt preferred, and bare feet.






STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY CLASS:

Conditioning and injury prevention work are an essential part of every dancer's training. This class will help dancers build their endurance, improve their strength, and increase their flexibility. Specific areas of focus will be extensions, leaps, and turns. Tight clothing must be worn and equipment will be provided.



Strength and Flexibility Dress Code:


Form fitting clothing and bare feet (leotard and tights are fine as long as tights can be rolled up)







INDUSTRY DANCE CLASS:

Commercial dancing is the most current and popular style of dance that encompasses jazz, hip hop, and contemporary. It is seen in music videos, tv, movies, advertisements, and many other outlets. This class will teach you all the latest tricks, exercises to build your confidence and performance, and most of all choreography. This is an advanced class and will be open by recommendation/approval only.


Industry Dance Dress Code:


Must wear form fitting clothing, but will allow a loose cover up when doing hip hop. Jazz shoes and sneakers (no black soles) will be needed.






COMPANY CLASS:

Company Class is designed to increase performance opportunities for students and to also work on performance skills in addition to technique. All company classes except beginning company will perform in CVDA's production of the Nutcracker in December and will also participate in a Spring Gala in April. In addition to performing in two productions company dancers also have the option to audition for competitions but are not required. Please see Children's Division for Beginning Company details.
