Children’s Division

No experience necessary for any classes in the Children’s Division.

2023-2024 Season Dates: August 28th-May 11th 

Holidays:

Labor Day: September 2nd - 4th

Thanksgiving Break: November 20th-26th

Winter Break: December 18th-January 5th

Coming back Saturday, January 6th to make up for Saturday/Sunday closed for Labor Day Weekend

Showcase Dates: May 18th-19th (Rehearsal May 15-17)

All classes in the children’s division will only perform their Showcase routine in one show. Students must meet the age requirement for each class by December 31st .

Creative Movement (Ages 3-4 years old)

Creative Movement class is an introduction into dance that is taught with an emphasis on enjoying and discovering the magic of movement. This class will teach very basic ballet steps that are developmentally appropriate for this age and will also work on improving gross motor skills.

Girls Dress code – short sleeved pink leotard (no skirt), pink tights and pink leather ballet slippers or skin tone tights and skin tone leather ballet slippers, hair in a bun or ponytail.

Boys Dress Code- white t-shirt, black shorts, white socks, and black ballet shoes.

Showcase Note-Each class will perform one routine in our annual Showcase.

Ballet/Tap Combination Class

This class offers a combination of both ballet and tap techniques. The ballet portion of this class will focus on learning a series of age appropriate ballet steps, refining gross motor skills, and enhancing creativity through movement. This introduction to tap will include learning very basic tap steps with an emphasis on experiencing the joys of rhythm. Ballet/Tap level 2 and 3 will continue to work on skills from Ballet/Tap 1 at a more accelerated rate and will progress to more advanced steps.

This introduction to ballet will focus on learning a series of age appropriate ballet steps, refining gross motor skills, and enhancing creativity through movement.

This introduction to jazz will teach basic beginner jazz steps and technique, fine motor skills, and musicality. Using contemporary music, this class is a combination of classical jazz technique and funk.

Broadway Bound

Learn how to be a triple threat in this fun Broadway focused class. Students will learn dancing, singing, and acting skills in a friendly and age appropriate environment.

Beginning Hip Hop (Ages 5-7 years old)

Central Virginia Dance Academy offers a high-energy introduction to current hiphop dance trends. This upbeat dance class includes a warm-up, original choreography, and a breakdown of today’s most popular hip-hop steps.

Girls and Boys Dress Code –tank top and either sweatpants, leggings, or cargo pants, black high-top dance sneakers, and hair pulled off face in a ponytail or bun.

Beginning Company (Ages 5-6 years old)

Company Class is designed to increase performance opportunities for students and also work on performance skills in addition to technique. Beginning Company will perform in one routine locally, participate in one competition in the spring, and dance in CVDA’s Showcase. Dancers signed up for Beginning Company must also be enrolled in either Ballet/Tap Combination Level 2 or 3, Broadway Bound, or Beginning Hip Hop.

Girls Dress Code- short sleeved pink leotard (no skirt), pink convertible tights or skin tone convertible tights, and hair in a bun. Shoes will be decided at the beginning of each season to fit the routine for each year.

Intro to Ballet (Ages 7-10 years old)

Intro to Ballet is the first level in the comprehensive ballet curriculum CVDA follows. This class provides the beginning fundamental skills and terminology needed to progress to the next levels of ballet technique. Intro to Ballet must be completed before moving to Ballet level 1.

Saturday 1:30pm-2:30pm (Misha)

Girls Dress Code- lavender leotard, pink tights and pink ballet slippers or skin tone tights and skin tone ballet slippers, and hair in a bun.

Boys Dress Code- white t-Shirt, black shorts or black tights, and black ballet slippers.

Showcase Note- Each class will perform one routine in our annual Showcase except the Saturday technique only class.

Intro to Jazz (Ages 7-10 years old)

Central Virginia Dance Academy offers a fun introduction into jazz dance technique including a warm up that includes isolations, flexibility, and strength building. This class will also begin to work on jazz skills that will serve as the foundation for Jazz level 1. Students will also enjoy using these new skills in original jazz choreography. Using contemporary music, this class is a combination of classical jazz technique and funk.

Intro to Contemporary (Ages 7-10 yrs old)

Contemporary is a blend of ballet, jazz, lyrical, and modern dance techniques. This class is a great introduction into the skills and technique needed to perform this popular style of dance.

Tap Basics (Ages 7-10 years old)

Using traditional and current tap techniques, this class focuses on rhythm, coordination, and various tap combinations that will set the foundation for Tap Level 1/2.

Junior Company 1

Company Class is designed to increase performance opportunities for students and to also work on performance skills in addition to technique. All company classes except beginning company will perform in CVDA's production of the Nutcracker in December and will also participate in a Spring Gala in April. In addition to performing in two productions company dancers also have the option to audition for competitions but are not required. Please see Children's Division for Beginning Company details.
